Eurostat Says Greece Recorded Largest Annual Unemployment Decline In April

The unemployment rate in Greece eased down to 17.6 percent of the workforce in April from the rate of 18.2 percent seen in March, Eurostat announced in a report released on Wednesday.

The EU statistical service’s report revealed that Greece recorded the largest annual decline in the EU in unemployment rates; a total of 17.6 percent of workers were unemployed this April, down from the level of 19.8 percent which was seen in the same month of 2018.

The unemployment rate among men in Greece was 14.5 percent, and among women it was recorded at 21.7 percent.

However, the overall unemployment rate among young people in Greece aged up to 25 years was at an unsettling 39.6 percent.

Greece’s unemployment rate still remains the highest in the EU, with Spain coming in second, with 14 percent of the entire population, and with fully 32.4 percent of its youth unemployed.

In nations belonging to the Eurozone, the unemployment rate in June of 2019 eased back to 7.5 from 7.6 percent in May, down from 8.2 percent in June of 2018; while inside the EU, the average unemployment rate was unchanged, at 6.3 percent.

According to the report, in actual numbers, there were a total of 15.7 million unemployed citizens across the nations of the EU and 12.4 million in the countries of the Eurozone.
